Skepticism grows towards US exit following chaotic Trump speech

  • President Trump addressed the US public yesterday in a speech designed to win support for the operation

  • Trump switched between reaffirming his desire to exit the conflict, to promising to "hit Iran like hell"

  • Most importantly, the President did not provide a timeline for the exit, with Oil futures rising after

Trump's address yesterday was much more of a lame duck than it could have been, instead of reassuring the country with a decisive timeline, or even just a stronger reassertion of an impending exit from the fighting, he just added more confusion.

Trump clearly cannot make up his own mind regarding what to do, likely trapped between knowing how unpopular the war is but also being terrified of going down as a "war losing" President.

And so yesterday's speech only served to muddy what was already opaque enough, with not only Oil rising, but USD back on top and heavier bets of interest rate hikes this year. Trump also threatened strikes on Iranian power stations, a favourite taunt of his, meaning that most of a speech that was expected to announce a winding down, was actually just spent winding up.
