How to double your annual leave in 2020

Written by Chloe Stevens | 7 Jan 2020

The Christmas and New Year period is officially over, which for most of us means back to the daily routine and 9-5. This has left many people desperately planning their next holiday and thinking about their annual leave for this year.

With the average Brit entitled to 28 days leave each year, we worked out how you can maximise your days off throughout 2020 to give you the most time off work.

When are the bank holidays in 2020?

The smartest way to approach booking annual leave this year is to make full use of the bank holidays.

You could enjoy an 11-day holiday around the Springtime, yet only use 5 days of your annual leave. Taking off the 9th-19th April, covers two bank holidays and a weekend. Win win!

TOTAL: 5 DAYS USED, 11 DAYS HOLIDAY

Or, if you’re fancying a further afield holiday that requires taking a little more time off, in May 2020, you could enjoy an 18-day break away from work, yet only use 10 days holiday if you book between May 8th to 25th.

TOTAL: 10 DAYS USED, 18 DAYS HOLIDAY

RUNNING TOTAL: 15 DAYS USED, 29 DAYS HOLIDAY

If, however, your priority is ensuring that you get some summer holiday fun with or without the kids, you can take a 9-day break between August and September with only four days of annual leave: book between 29th August – 6th September.

TOTAL: 4 DAYS USED, 9 DAYS HOLIDAY

RUNNING TOTAL: 19 DAYS USED, 38 DAYS HOLIDAY

Christmas is a time of year where everyone is after a well-deserved break away from work. Why not take a larger holiday around the festive time of year and treat yourself to 10 days off, only using 4 days of holiday! Set your last day as 24th December and you won’t have to be back until 4th January.

TOTAL: 4 DAYS USED, 10 DAYS HOLIDAY

RUNNING TOTAL: 23 DAYS USED, 48 DAYS HOLIDAY

All of this time off equates to only 23 days, which leaves the average worker still 5 more days to play with! Be smart with your annual leave this year and you can almost double your holiday days.

Planning a trip abroad

Planning your 2020 travel itinerary nice and early helps you bag the best holiday deals – but while you’re at it, don’t forget to check if your passports are still in date and that you’ve got your travel money, holiday insurance and Caxton multi-currency card all sorted well in advance too.

To make it even easier to save for a holiday, why not set up a Travel Savings Plan with Caxton to ensure that your holiday kitty builds up in time? It is a great way to steadily build up your travel fund and remove exchange rate uncertainty.
