Five Shocks Offshore Workers Never See Coming (Until It’s Too Late)

Written by Errol Izzet | 1 Jul 2025

Whether it’s the allure of big paydays or the thrill of adventure, more and more Brits are heading offshore for work. But behind the high wages and exotic locations, there are a few realities no one really talks about — from tax traps to currency headaches. If you’re gearing up to work offshore, here are five things you need to know before you go.

1. You Could Still Owe Tax in the UK (Yes, Even If You’re Earning Abroad)
Think you’ve escaped the taxman by working overseas? Think again. HMRC has very clear rules about when you’re considered a UK resident for tax purposes – and it often boils down to days. Spend too many back home and you could be liable for UK income tax, even on your offshore earnings. The Statutory Residence Test is what decides it – and it’s worth tracking every single day to avoid a nasty bill.

Tip: Use a tracker app or spreadsheet to monitor your time in and out of the UK – and speak to a tax adviser who understands offshore work.

2. Your Money Might Be Losing Value Without You Knowing It
Working in USD, AUD or EUR? Great. Getting paid is one thing – but transferring it home is another. Exchange rate swings, bank fees and poor conversion rates can cost you hundreds. That’s where a multi-currency card like Caxton comes in. It lets you hold, spend and move money in multiple currencies – and you can swap when the rate suits you, not the bank.

Tip: Don’t let the bank auto-convert your pay. Use a Caxton card and lock in better rates when it’s time to spend.

3. Mental Burnout Is Real – Even With the High Pay
The long shifts. The isolation. The high-pressure environment. Offshore work is rewarding, but it’s no holiday. Many workers underestimate the mental toll – and don’t prepare ways to decompress. Whether it’s podcasts, fitness apps or regular check-ins with family, you need something to keep your head above water.

Tip: Download content offline before you go – Wi-Fi can be patchy. And don’t dismiss digital mental health services – many cater specifically to remote workers.

4. You’ll Need to Be Your Own GP (and Chef, and Cleaner)
Healthcare offshore varies massively. Some rigs and sites have full medical teams – others, not so much. And if you’ve got allergies or ongoing health needs, you must take enough supplies. Same goes for food preferences – you may be your own cook for weeks.

Tip: Get a full health check before heading out. Pack meds for longer than you plan to be gone. And don’t forget creature comforts (instant coffee and hot sauce go a long way).

5. Home Will Keep Moving Without You
Offshore life can feel like a time warp – but back home, things change. Kids grow up. Bills arrive. Relationships shift. Staying connected is harder than you think, especially across time zones and signal blackouts. Prepare yourself – and your loved ones – for the rhythm of being away.

Tip: Set up online access for everything – banking, school updates, bills. And agree regular catch-up times with family so no one feels left behind.

Planning to work offshore?
Start with the basics: check your tax status, sort your finances (Caxton can help), pack smart, and prepare for life on and off the job.

Because being unprepared offshore doesn’t just cost you money – it can cost you your peace of mind.
